The first game my wife and I bought was Carcassonne, and we were hooked instantly, laying out those tiles can be so much fun. So grab a bag, draw a tile and see if your favourites fit on my list! The walls are some of my favourite parts of this game, and it really sets it apart from a lot of games. Kingdomino is obviously the simpler one of the 2, but Queendomino just adds enough to make it more strategic but not take away the charm of the original.
You draw 3 tiles per round, and you set bids for 2 of them and axe off one of them… all done secretly behind a screen. And then they all get auctioned off. What really makes this game stand out is the scoring: there are 20 scoring tiles, 4 of them are used for each game and they are always in a different order and scored in different ways, which makes every single game feel unique and adds so much replay-ability.
So in one game one tile might seem worthless, but in another the same tile will be extremely valuable. This makes what could have been just another Carcassonne clone become one of the best out there.
Karuba is one of my all time favourite games, and my favourite tile laying game of all time. Well… the original game is great, but so many games have made tile laying better. My favourite is the The Castle variant, which is a tight 2 player game but is currently out of print.
Gold Rush is amazing variant with a wild west theme and some mining aspects to it. But for the sake of arguments sake, get Gold Rush. Yea… Gold Rush is really awesome.Move files based on name

Most tile games use rectangular or square pieces and depict a picture or a meaningful symbol.
The game play is usually turn based. In the vernacular of board gaming, Succulent has two main mechanics: Tile placement and set collection. Both of these mechanics make some intuitive sense even to non-gamers, which I think is a big reason why they remain so popular in game design.
Tile placement, in particular, is a major genre in the industry. It refers to any game where at least part of your moves involves placing tiles on to the main board, or creating the board as you go by laying those tiles. Playing Succulent made me think about the genre as a whole; as a result, here are my favorite tile placement games of all time. Tile-laying is just one part of this adorable game where players will move a panda figurine around the modular board, gathering bamboo shoots he eats, and moving a gardener figure around to grow back the bamboo.
You score by completing objective cards that revolve around bamboo eaten, plants grown on specific tile colors, and the configurations of those tiles on the board. Players claim hexagonal tiles from a central supply and place them on their personal boards, which represent their own little principalities, showing six different terrain types, each of which scores in its own way.
You can also get points for completing areas of each type of terrain, for filling all hexes on your board of a terrain type, for selling trade goods, and especially from yellow bonus tiles that can gain you up to 20 points in a game where is usually a winning score. You score by completing cities and roads or surrounding tiles with abbeys, regaining your meeples once those are finished; or by placing farmers, meeples that remain on the board permanently and score only at game-end based on which cities are adjacent to their fields.

Games here see you build an individual or shared tableau where placement is contingent on those already in the tableau — and where this is the main element of the game. The aim: keep your dragon on the board as long as possible, before your route takes you back off the edge of the board. While probably best with four or more it may have a bit too much downtime and too few turns for some at eight players, but turns are fast and I think it does hold up across the player counts.
The timing of these claims is key: go too early and your opponents will fence it in, making it low scoring — but leave it too long, and someone else may beat you to the claim. And it is definitely a game where your ability will improve the more you play. Should be easily available thanks to a reprint.
This game of laying hexagonal tiles has a neat twist: a bit like bingo, one player draws a tile and everyone has to play the exact same tile from their set, but they can lay it anywhere inside their tile grid. Each tile has three coloured lines cutting across it, and each colour has a number on it. I actually prefer Karubawhich is clearly inspired by Take it Easy but has a nicer adventuring theme and less maths — but is a little longer minsless flexible only players and a little more expensive.
In Isle of Skye each player is making their own little Isle by buying tiles in an effort to score the most points. The game is a little step up in complexity from Carcassonne, but a great next-buy for anyone who likes the general feel of that game.
If you like a tongue-in-cheek sci-fi theme and find the usual tile-laying experience a little pedestrian, how would you like to frantically build a space ship out of tiles in real time — complete with guns, engines, crew and storage space? And then fly it through alien infested asteroid fields and watch as half and often more of it is smashed to bits or vaporised on the way to your destination?
The Best Tile Placement Board Games
Then Galaxy Trucker is the game for you. And while the flying bit takes longer than the tile-laying, ship-building bit the ship building is definitely where the real game is. Alhambra players, 60 minutes. While most definitely a tile-laying game, Alhambra is the closest game on the list to being disqualified for having too much else going on.
The game has many expansions, so if you start to tire of the base game there are loads of ways to add little complications to the mix. When your move is over usually when you run out of money, hit land, or decide to stop you can place settlers on the final tile if it has land on it — and if it completes an island, players with the biggest colonies on it will claim points.
Special tiles some good, some bad add a little extra exploration chaos and accepting a few rough edges Entdecker is simply good fun. Carcassonne players, minutes. One of the famous gateway game trifecta alongside Ticket to Ride and Catan, the Carcassonne base game is a simple, elegant and lovely looking game for families, kids and gamers alike.
The key is not to run out of meeple by getting them stuck in unfinishable areas, while trying to muscle in on large areas your opponents may be building — while also placing some meeple as farmers, who will score large open areas but only at the end of the game. My preference is Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers — a stone age version that takes a few of the best expansion ideas and adds them to the base game.
Scoring is harsh, as any unfinished islands are removed from your board at the end — while also giving you minus points for having unfilled spaces. Collecting tiles with boats and resources can help you move around that area better — but may not score you points at the end if you use them for movement where tiles with trees are guaranteed points. Lots to think about, despite a small rulebook, and it also packs in several variants to ramp up the challenge.
Ingenious players, 45 minutes. For my winner we return to straight abstract games, and top game designer Reina Knizia. Brilliant with two and fun with three or four, it is the game that got me back into the hobby and is still a firm favourite today. A good shout. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.
